The concept of providing live, professional entertainment to communities throughout the United States was originated by Columbia Artists Management, as Community Concerts, Inc.  The objective was to nurture and support a permanent concert-going audience base through not-for profit arts organizations at the local level.  Craven County Concert Association was started in 1947 and with limited exceptions and a name change in 1985, to Craven Concerts, Inc.,  the organization has fulfilled this objective by presenting a five-event series for 25 consecutive years.  These performances are now a tradition that contribute significantly to the cultural atmosphere of the region. In 2006 Craven Concerts proudly presented live opera for the first time. The Asheville Lyric Opera’s production of Madame Butterfly was performed to a sold out, appreciative audience. In 2007, Craven Concerts presented The Asheville Lyric Opera in the beloved opera, LaTraviata to an equally enthusiastic audience.

The Board of Directors maintains contacts with agents and the North Carolina Arts Council and begins auditioning, selecting and contracting for productions over a year in advance of performances.  Our goals are to provide top professional and diverse performers each season.  Our success in achieving these goals has been proven with sold out seasons over the last three years.

Another main objective of Craven Concerts, Inc. is to provide Craven County students with in-school performances that will foster their appreciation for the performing arts, add an experience as concert-goers and integrate performances into their curriculum.  The Asheville's Lyric Opera’s  in-school performances of Madame Butterfly in 2006  and LaTraviata in 2007 were enthusiastically received by almost 800 students  for each opera. Last season we presented an in-school program performed by world famous concert pianist Alpin Hong. This season we are working with Craven County schools to provide a diverse offering to the students of Craven County.
